Introduction
Casa El Refugio is, according to many visitors, southern Mexico's most gorgeous house offering complete privacy within adobe walls, 360 degree, unobstructed views of awe-inspiring mountains, exquisite furnishings and artwork, enormous main rooms, a 65-foot lap pool, and fabulous landscaped gardens with abundant orange, lemon, avocado, coffee, zapote, banana, pecan, pomegranate and loquat trees, flower-filled terraces and fountains.

Enjoy the huge, fully-equipped colonial kitchen, the 300 sq. foot octagonal glass studio, the working fireplace, the hummingbird and butterly garden, the many terraces, our DVD and video library, stereo, filtered pure well water, and gorgeous views from every room. This is THE ONLY house of its kind available in Oaxaca City and its surroundings.
El Refugio is located in Huayapan, a charming 3000 year old Zapotec Indian village that is within Oaxaca city limits, and just 15 minutes from downtown Oaxaca, Mexico's beautiful cultural capital. Oaxaca also enjoys one of the world's best climates averaging 73 degrees in the daytime with very low humidity. At El Refugio, you get the best of both worlds: tranquil village life as it has been lived for centuries, and the bustling capital city with its many museums, events and fantastic shops and restaurants. Take a mountain hike starting just outside the door, or a visit to one of the many craft villages throughout Oaxaca state, or to the Sierra Juarez mountain villages, or to a restaurant, museum, cinema or nightclub downtown..

El Refugio comes with the services of our excellent english-speaking property manager, two housekeepers, a pool maintenance man, and gardener. We can arrange separately for a fantastic Oaxacan chef, ( who gives wonderful cooking lessons ) and can stock the house with your favorite foods and drinks. We can also offer our manager’s services as guide, driver and personal assistant as well as arrange for Zapotec massages at the property and traditional temazcal Zapotec steam baths in Huayapan.

We are offering this earthly paradise to those lucky people who can take a week (or more ) away to work on a novel, prepare a show, run a company via the internet, or just relax in a hammock by the pool and hummingbird garden. You won't hear sounds of traffic, horns, or sirens, just bird calls, the brook that runs by our land, wind in the trees, and the occasional barking dog or braying donkey.
