Villa le Moggie |
|
"Le
Moggie" is a rare place where you can find true privacy and tranquility
in an unspoiled region of northern Italy, the Alta Val di Vara. Our sixteenth
century, stone villa is very privately situated in a national park on
a mountainside overlooking chestnut forests and distant medieval villages.
The Alta Val di Vara received the first ever European Community award
in 1999 for the highest environmental quality of life in all of Europe.
Today, the Alta Val di Vara continues to receive many international awards
as well as discerning visitors who come for the scenery, hiking, exquisite
gastronomy, picturesque villages, archaeological treasures and
proximity
to many art-and architecture-filled cities and glamorous beaches of note.
Near "Le Moggie" is a small medieval village, Valletti, where
the maid and caretaker live. The maid can be hired on an individual basis,
according to your needs. Local residents are very hospitable and honest
and can point you in the right direction on your walks and hikes.
Le Moggie has been completely restored and is furnished throughout with
local antiques, and beautiful textiles and rugs. Some of the amenities
the house offers are fireplaces, excellent acoustics for your musical
pleasure, many books and board games for relaxation, a very well-equipped
kitchen, baths with beautiful handmade tiles, spring water, a separate
laundry room, and modern plumbing and electrical systems. Hiking paths
and wonderful views abound near the villa, which is located on a semi-private
road. No other houses are visible nearby, only across the valley, in the
distance. The stars, seen from the terraces on a moonless night, are breathtaking.
Villa le Moggie is available for rent by the week or for longer periods.
We offer discounts of 15% for rentals of 3 weeks or more. Please send
requests for availability and rates to our email address.

The medieval town of Varese Ligure, 15 minutes from Le Moggie by car,
is the old regional capital and has been declared a patrimony of mankind
by Unesco because of its many beautiful and perfectly restored old buildings
and squares. During August, Varese mounts a superb open-air opera festival
in the charming square behind the town castle.Varese
offers extensive shopping and banking facilities, a very entertaining
weekly market, an olympic-sized pool, and some of the best restaurants
we have tried anywhere, serving Ligurian specialties such as pasta with
pesto, ravioli, porcini mushrooms, game, wild boar, chestnut pasta with
pinoli sauce and other delicacies. The food stores are excellent, stocked
with fantastic regional wines, the best parmesan and prosciutto in the
world, from nearby Parma, and the local porcinis - considered the best
in Italy. In spring and fall, the nearby Vara river offers whitewater
rafting and there are also excellent riding facilites in the area. Bicycles
can be rented in the town square.

The elegant Riviera resorts, Portofino, Chiavari,
the Cinque Terre and Sestri Levante, are about 45 minutes away, while
Parma, Genoa, Pisa and Florence are also not far, making many wonderful
day trips possible. Pisa is spectacular and has far fewer visitors than
Florence. Genoa is a beautiful port city, largely unknown to tourists
despite having the most extensive medieval center in Europe. The Italian
rivera towns are remarkable jewels, each full of lovely stores, excellent
seafood restaurants, and unique beaches, our favorite being the Baia del
Silenzio in Sestri Levante, where you can rent kayaks and head out to
sea for the sunset views of the coast. Sestri, a very glamorous people-watching
resort, also has arguably the best gelato in Italy, at Gelateria Carrugio
!

"We had a wonderful time at Le Moggie. The house was wonderful, and I have high hopes that we will be able to return for a longer stay. I cannot say enough nice things about all you have done to the house and about what a comfortable, relaxing, and renewing place it is for a holiday. Thank you again for the opportunity to stay at Le Moggie. As I wrote in the guestbook, I would love to know more about the region and especially about the people who live closest to Le Moggie. I suspect they have very interesting life stories."

"We have returned from Italy, having
had a moving and memorable trip, Le Moggie being the highlight.
It is absolutely beautiful and serene. We were amazed and pleased
by the spaciousness, the exquisite taste in the design both inside
and outside, the lushness of the forest and farms and something
else, hard to put into words, that reflects the beauty and balance
that is Italy." Ron Veronda 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007.

"I
cannot thank you enough for sharing your home with me. It has been an
experience I will never forget and look forward to repeating. The air
here must truly be different because I feel more light of heart as I have
felt in many years." Betty Graber 2005
"We had a wonderful time at Le Moggie. Chestnuts
everywhere, great views, delicious food at local restaurants. It is a
beautiful place !" Paul and Karen Delay 2005
"What
a dear town is Varese Ligure. And, oh, market day! Everyone was
kind and helpful, seeming to delight in our feeble but earnest
attempts to speak Italian. We gorged on, among other things, Diablo
chicken, porcinis, chestnut honey, corzetti, local wines, incredible
cheeses, and our beloved prosecco. Friends and acquaintances,
awed by the photographs we took, have asked for rental information.
Hopefully, others will follow our lead and spend time at the wonderful
Le Moggie." Judy Jackson 2002 |
